One of the best comedies of the 2000s is on TV later

Slappin' da bass.

Paul Moore

Will you watch this later? Totes McGotes.

Aside from hanging out with Seamus Coleman’s dad, giving a nickname to his testicles and refusing to age, there are approximately 7,437 other reasons why Paul Rudd is the greatest person alive.

Hell, we even listed some of our favourite Brian Fantana Rudd moments here and if you’re looking for a comedy to watch tonight, we have just the thing for you.

Still though, what happened on that stag with Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage) in Donegal, Ireland?

On that note, it’s somewhat fitting that the superb I Love You, Man is on TV tonight because the bro-mantic comedy revolves around one man’s hilarious bid to assemble a group of groomsmen for his wedding.

Peter Klaven (Rudd) is a successful real estate agent who, upon getting engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey, discovers, to his dismay and chagrin, that he has no male friend close enough to serve as his Best Man.

Peter immediately sets out to rectify the situation, embarking on a series of bizarre and awkward ‘man-dates’ before meeting Sydney Fife, a charming, opinionated man with whom he instantly bonds. But the closer the two men get, the more Peter’s relationship with Zooey suffers, ultimately forcing him to choose between his fiancee and his new found ‘bro’ in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a ‘friend’.

Much like Rudd’s other films of that era, Anchorman and Role Models, John Hamburg’s comedy is brimming with wonderful one-liners and there’s a genuine sweetness, believability and comedic chemistry that underscores the whole thing.

Comedies aren’t always critical darlings but I Love You, Man stands out from the rest of the contenders with Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic ratings of 83% and 70% respectively.

Here’s what some of the reviews said:

The Hollywood Reporter – “It’s a rare comedy that actually grows funnier on reflection. It benefits enormously from the talents of the two stars.”

The Examiner – “Really, I Love You, Man is a wonderfully clever romantic comedy, it just happens that the love is platonic and between two guys.”

Entertainment Weekly – “Paul Rudd gives a startlingly funny and original performance as a nice guy with serious dweebish tendencies, and the delight of what Rudd does here comes down to how exquisitely embarrassing he is to watch.”

Oh yes, it’s time to get slappin’ da bass man!

Ok, what are you waiting for? It’s time to make some film plans with your partner or best friend. Just remember to sign-off with the iconic line “I will see you there, or I will see you on another time!”

Is this film amazing? You got it, Joben.

I Love You, Man airs on Comedy Central UK at 21:00, or if you prefer, it’s also available to watch on Netflix.
