“GEORGE BURGESS!!!” Who doesn’t love The Snapper?
It’s one of the great Irish films of the last 30 years, based on one of the great Irish novels of the last 30 years, and now The Snapper is being made into a play.
Roddy Doyle’s famed story about a young Irish woman who becomes pregnant, resulting in a guessing game as to the identity of the father, was turned into a movie by Stephen Frears back in 1993.
Reviews were ecstatic, with Colm Meaney’s performance as central character Dessie Curley – opposite Tina Kellegher’s Sharon – receiving rave reviews at the time.
In perfect casting, Simon Delaney will take on the role made famous by Meaney, while the role of Sharon has yet to be cast. The play will in Dublin’s iconic Gate Theatre.
Simon O’Gorman will play the lecherous George Burgess, while Hilda Fay will play Veronica and Kate Gilmore will take to the stage as Jackie.
Delaney shared the news on his Twitter feed on Thursday morning.
