The movie will be written and directed by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame.

David Corenswet has been cast as Clark Kent/Superman in DC’s upcoming reboot of the classic superhero, while Rachel Brosnahan has been chosen to play Lois Lane.

The blockbuster will be the first project to be written and directed by James Gunn (the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy) since he was appointed co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios last year.

Both Corenswet and Brosnahan had previously been reported as being major contenders for the role, with multiple outlets stating that they underwent in-person screen tests before being cast.

Corenswet previously starred in the TV shows Hollywood, The Politician (both created by Ryan Murphy) and We Own This City. He also had a memorable supporting role in this year’s acclaimed horror movie Pearl.

Meanwhile, Brosnahan is best known for starring in the hit Prime Video comedy show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She also appeared in the series House of Cards and Manhattan, as well as the films I’m Your Woman, Patriot’s Day and The Courier.

Gunn confirmed the pair’s casting, writing on Twitter: “They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people”.

Exact plot details for Superman: Legacy are being kept under wraps but Gunn’s co-DC Studios chairman and CEO Peter Safran previously said the following about the superhero movie:

“This is really the start of the DCU. It’s not an origins story, it focuses on Superman’s balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

“He’s the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he’s kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy is set to fly into cinemas on 11 July 2025.
