Love/Hate creator and star’s new crime thriller show sets release date

The show is coming to the BBC and RTÉ very soon.

Co-created by Carolan and Chris Addison (Breeders), the series has been commissioned by both RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland and will premiere next month. The show is based on author Caimh McDonnell's beloved 'Dublin' series of novels.

The plot synopsis for the six-part crime thriller says it "mixes a Bonnie and Clyde-style adventure of bent cops, kidnapping, and underworld fixers" with an "8th-century tall tale of monks, Vikings, buried treasure and a priceless holy book."

It adds: "Bridget (Ella-Lily Hyland, Black Doves) is an unconventional nurse who works the night shift at a Dublin nursing home. She reads the old folk bedtime horror stories, arranges clandestine late-night dances, and euthanises them if they ask nicely.

"Into this secret world comes Paul (Casey Walsh, Amongst the Wolves), a young man stuck stealing cars to repay a debt to crime boss Ma Baker (Philippa Dunne, Amandaland).

"But they’re not the only ones after it. Things get complicated as vicious gangster Wesley Swanson (Packy Lee, Peaky Blinders), and his henchmen close in…"

Ella Lily Hyland in Tall Tales & Murder

Filming began on Tall Tales & Murder in the Republic of Ireland in the early summer of 2025. Addison will also serve as director on the crime thriller, along with Neasa Hardiman (Happy Valley, Sea Fever).

It's worth noting that you don't have to worry about Tall Tales & Murder being cancelled after one season. The BBC and RTÉ have already handed the series a two-season order, suggesting they are confident the project will be a success.

Tall Tales & Murder premieres in Ireland on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player on Sunday, 27 September. It will also be broadcast on BBC One and BBC One NI this Autumn.
