Prime Video has just added The Bikeriders, the very cool 2023 biker crime drama starring Tom Hardy (The Drop, Lawless).
Inspired by the 1960s photo-book of the same name by Danny Lyon (who is played in the movie by Mike Faist of Challengers fame), the fictional story follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club through the lives of its members, including its leader Johnny (Hardy).
The story also focuses on Kathy (Jodie Comer, The Last Duel), the wife of the wild and reckless young bikerider Benny (Butler).
She tries her best to navigate her husband's untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny's attention.
Holding a 79% Rotten Tomatoes score, we'd argue that the movie overcomes a slightly meandering story, thanks to its humour, its authentic sense of place, and its fantastic lead turns by Butler, Hardy and particularly Comer.
Perhaps it was these attributes that led critic Kyle Smith, of The Wall Street Journal, to describe The Bikeriders as thus: "The finest movie about motorcycle culture I’ve ever seen.
"Told with gusto à la Goodfellas, this richly evocative look at how a 1960s Midwestern biker club turned into a gang establishes Elvis Oscar nominee Austin Butler as a major movie star."
