Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 26 August) is The Drop, the brilliant 2014 crime thriller starring Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy (The Revenant).
In the film, the actor plays Bob, an assuming Brooklyn bartender who works in a pub owned by his cousin, Marv (The Sopranos' James Gandolfini, in his final film role before his death).
The bar is occasionally used by the Chechen mafia as a temporary bank for illegal money, activity to which Bob typically turns a blind eye.
When Bob discovers an abandoned, battered puppy near his home, he asks his neighbour, Nadia (Noomi Rapace, Prometheus), for help nursing it back to health. This leads to a mutual attraction sparking between the pair.
A robbery at the bar and the return of Nadia's abusive ex (Matthias Schoenaerts, The Old Guard), however, wind up dragging Bob into a life of crime he had been trying to avoid.
Written by acclaimed crime author Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Smoke) and directed by acclaimed Belgian filmmaker Michaël R. Roskam (Black Bird, Racer and the Jailbird), The Drop's cast also includes James Frecheville (Black '47) and John Ortiz (Miami Vice).
The movie grips viewers immediately, thanks to its excellent, authentic performances, as well as its moody atmosphere and great sense of place.
That's before all the film's different story threads ingeniously link together in a twisty climax that should leave audience members with their jaws on the floor and eager to immediately rewatch the thriller.
The Drop is airing on TV tonight on Film4 at 11.10pm. It is also streaming on Disney+.
