Our TV movie pick for tonight (Thursday, 8 January) is The Guns of Navarone, the classic '60s action-adventure war film.
Set during World War II in 1943, the story follows a small Allied commando team that is sent to destroy enormous radar-directed large-calibre German guns on the Greek island of Navarone.
This is so that they can rescue Allied troops trapped on the nearby island of Keros.
"Led by British Major Franklin (Anthony Quayle, Lawrence of Arabia), the team includes American Captain Mallory (Gregory Peck, To Kill a Mockingbird), Greek resistance fighter Stavros (Anthony Quinn, Viva Zapata!) and reluctant explosives expert Miller (David Niven, A Matter of Life and Death)," the plot synopsis adds.
"Facing impossible odds, the men battle stormy seas and daunting cliffs. When Franklin is injured, Mallory takes command, and personal enmities spill over."
Based on the novel of the same name by Alistair MacLean (Ice Station Zebra), The Guns of Navarone was directed by J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear), while its screenplay was written by Carl Foreman (The Bridge on the River Kwai).
The movie's cast also includes legendary Irish actor Richard Harris (The Field) in one of his earliest roles.
Praised for its action, cast and epic story, the film is widely considered a classic of its genre.
The Guns of Navarone is airing on TV tonight on BBC Four at 8pm. It is also available to rent on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store.
