Given the fact that TV viewers are currently addicted to David Fincher’s superb Mindhunter on Netflix, it’s somewhat fitting that a documentary about one of David Fincher’s most critically-acclaimed films is coming.

As we know, the director of Se7en, Gone Girl and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a master of the macabre, but some film fans would argue that Zodiac is his definitive serial killer film.

If you haven’t seen the 2007 feature then you’re in for a treat because it’s arguably the most factual representation of what a murder investigation entails – it’s methodical, cold and incredibly detailed.

In the film, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo all go in search of the Zodiac Killer – an unidentified individual who terrorised Northern California during a killing spree that took place the late 1960s/early 1970s.

In the new documentary Zodiac Killer: Case Closed, the five-part series will open up a brand new investigation into the mystery of the unnamed serial killer.

The documentary will follow a team of detectives, investigators, and codebreakers as they finally attempt to name the infamous Zodiac Killer and solve the mystery once and for all.

The killer’s infamous Z340 code has baffled some of the greatest minds in cryptology for over 45 years. Made up of ancient and modern symbology, the code is even ranked alongside the Nazi’s Enigma Code as one of the most difficult in history to break; with the FBI, CIA and thousands of experts unable to crack it.

Attempting to solve the mystery will be Sal LaBarbera, the most successful homicide detective in LAPD history, and his partner, cold-case expert Ken Mains.

Joining Sal and Ken is a team of expert code-breakers, led by UCLA master codebreaker Kevin Knight, who will work alongside a super-computer, known as CARMEL, in order to crack the Zodiac’s cyphers.

In this series, the investigative team has been granted unprecedented access to police files, witnesses, new clues, and received the cooperation of representatives of the CIA and FBI to help them with their investigation.

Zodiac Killer: Case Closed premieres on Wednesday, November 22 at 9pm on History UK.
