Based on true events, the star-studded thriller is also streaming on Prime Video.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 13 March) is The Report, the gripping and star-studded 2019 political thriller.

Based on true events, the film tells the story of Daniel Jones (Adam Driver), the lead investigator for the US Senate's sweeping study into the CIA's use of torture on suspected terrorists post 9/11.

Navigating bureaucracy and politics, Jones and his team scroll through millions of CIA emails over six years, eventually piecing together a narrative regarding War on Terror practices.

The findings, however, are so disturbing that the White House don’t want to release them.

"With the truth at stake, Jones [battles] tirelessly to make public what many in power [seek] to keep hidden," the plot synopsis adds.

Adam Driver in The Report

The Report was written and directed by Scott Z. Burns, who penned the screenplays for the Steven Soderbergh-directed thrillers Contagion and Side Effects.

The cast of Burns' movie also includes Annette Bening, Corey Stoll, Jon Hamm, Matthew Rhys, Maura Tierney, Michael C. Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Ted Levine and Tim Blake Nelson.

Driver gives a brilliant lead performance, quietly charting his character's transition from cheerful rookie to embittered investigator over the course of his research.

Burns' journalistic approach to the important story, as well as his snappy Aaron Sorkin-esque script, also make the film worth seeking out.

The Report is airing on TV tonight on RTÉ2 at 9.30pm. It's also streaming on Prime Video.
