The Rock’s best John McClane impression is among the movies on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

Wednesday.

Doesn’t really feel like Wednesday, though, does it?

The post-Bank Holiday weekend lull has us all out of whack.

Nevertheless, the middle of the week is upon us and we have terrestrial-hosted movies for you.

Here’s how it looks on the box on Wednesday, 4 May…

Sahara – Film4 – 6.40pm

Matthew McConaughey – pre-McConaissance – gets his Indiana Jones on.

Casablanca – Turner Classic Movies – 6.55pm

Look at that, a genuinely classic movie on Turner Classic Movies.

The World is Not Enough – ITV4 – 8pm

Pierce Brosnan’s third outing as 007, featuring a rocket scientist named Christmas Jones, a villain that can’t feel pain and one of the better opening sequences of the Navan man’s tuxedo’d tenure.

Lethal Weapon 4 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover inexplicably pose a physical challenge to Jet Li.

Skyscraper – Film4 – 9pm

Our main choice this evening, largely because it’s slim pickings and the actual best film available isn’t on until almost one in the morning. See below for that one.

The Rock finds himself in something of a Die Hard situation, fighting off bad guys and trying to save his family while trapped in a very dangerous, very high building.

Escape Plan – Sky Showcase – 10pm

Arnie and Stallone end up in the same prison together. As the title implies, they don’t intend to stay for too long.

Zombieland – Film4 – 11.05pm

Jesse Eisenberg and friends try to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Rocky III – ITV4 – 11.40pm

The third one.

Picnic at Hanging Rock – Film4 – 12.50am

Pretty outstanding atmospheric horror that no doubt packed a lot more terrifying punch in 1975 when it was released, but still deserves spooky plaudits today. A group of schoolgirls go missing during a routine picnic, with the cause of the disappearance difficult to determine.
