A severely overlooked crime thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

the trust

It’s a real hidden gem.

To paraphrase Elton John, Friday night’s alright for movies. If you needed further proof of that statement, here are the films airing on TV this evening:

Kill Bill Vol. 1 – Dave – 9pm

The first part of Quentin Tarantino’s incredible martial arts epic.

Darkman – Film4 – 9pm

Liam Neeson stars in this excellent 1990 superhero flick from director Sam Raimi (the original Spider-Man trilogy) as a brilliant scientist burned alive and left for dead by a ruthless mobster.

After a treatment to cure him of his injuries fails, he develops super-human abilities which he uses, along with his scientific knowledge, to seek revenge.

The Expendables 3 – Sky Max – 9pm

Sylvester Stallone and his expendables crew face off a villain played by Mel Gibson in this average action sequel.

Words on Bathroom Walls – BBC Three – 9pm

This coming-of-age romantic drama about a boy about a high school student (Charlie Plummer) diagnosed with schizophrenia has an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Elijah Wood in The Trust, our movies on TV pick for tonight

Breakheart Pass – TG4 – 9.50pm

Friday is Western night on TG4 and this evening is no exception. This one is from the ’70s and stars Charles Bronson.

Life’s a Breeze – RTÉ2 – 9.50pm

In this Irish comedy, Pat Shortt plays a man on the search for a mattress full of money that his family accidentally threw away.

Jack Reacher – E4 – 10pm

Tom Cruise embodies Lee Child’s famous literary character in this supremely watchable action thriller.

Mr and Mrs Smith – Virgin Media Two – 10.30pm

The Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt hit action-comedy that will become a Prime Video series next year.

Dead Man’s Shoes – Film4 – 10.50pm

In this hard-hitting and powerful British psychological thriller from filmmaker Shane Meadows (This is England), a soldier (a phenomenal Paddy Considine) returns to his hometown to get even with the thugs who brutalised his brother years ago.

The Trust – Legend – 11.05pm

Our pick for tonight is this crime thriller about a pair of cops (Elijah Wood and Nicolas Cage) who – bored with their jobs and struggling financially – hatch a plan to rob a vault full of drug money. However, proceedings don’t go according to plan.

The debut movie from music video directing duo Alex and Ben Brewer – The Trust’s stylish filmmaking, dark comedy elements and twisty plot mean it should have received more love upon release back in 2016.

If you miss this hidden gem tonight, it is also available to rent for just €0.99 on Apple TV+.

Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two stoners who, you guessed it, get the munchies – this is the first entry in the comedy franchise.

The Runway – RTÉ One – 11.50pm

This Irish comedy-drama from 2010 follows the residents of a Cork town in the ’80s who come to the aid of a South American pilot (Demián Bichir) who crashes near where they live.
