“This is the worst plan ever!”

Cork, 2007. A drug-trafficking boat spills bales of cocaine off the coast of Cork. It’s the biggest haul in the history of the state. While arrests are made and gangsters attempt to flee the country, two friends in inner city Cork spot an opportunity.

The Young Offenders is a hilarious new Irish comedy about two friends, a missing bale of cocaine and “the worst plan ever”. The lads reason that because they’re underage they’ve got a free pass to carry out any illegal activity they want without going to prison.

Together they cycle to west Cork to locate the missing bale of cocaine for “a holiday and a treasure hunt all in one.”

The film’s stars Cork natives Chris Walley and Alex Murphy in winning turns as the titular Young Offenders. Chris Walley has been in London for the last year studying acting at RADA. Alex Murphy has just finished his Leaving Cert and has been accepted to The Lir in Dublin to study acting.

The comic chemistry between the lads is undeniable and their characters are impossible to dislike, despite their dodgy motives.

The two lads are definitely stars on the rise. Their supporting cast isn’t too shabby either with turns from PJ Gallagher (Naked Camera) and Hilary Rose (Republic Of Telly).

The film’s writer/director Peter Foott has previously worked on a number of RTE comedy projects, most notably helming the music video for The Rubberbandits classic Horse Outside.

The film had them rolling in the aisles at the Galway Film Fleadh where it picked up the Best Irish Film Award, proving to be a huge hit with audiences of all ages.

It’s also picked up its fair share of high-profile admirers. Cork’s own Graham Norton raved that the young leads were “a classic movie double act” and that the film is “very funny, outrageous and full of heart.” A few of the heads here at JOE were lucky enough to see a sneak peak and can confirm that it’s chocker block full of laughs and recommend seeing it with an audience for enhanced enjoyment.
