Following in Austin Butler’s footsteps.
James Mangold, director of the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, has revealed that star Timothée Chalamet will do his own singing for the movie.
The director, fresh from completing the highly-anticipated Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, told Collider that there would be no dubbing-over for the musician’s iconic voice. In the interview, Mangold gives a straight-up “of course!” when asked if Chalamet was singing.

The director also revealed that production for the film will start in August and gave an insight into the time of Dylan’s life it will focus on.
“It’s such an amazing time in American culture and the story of Bob — a young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years,” he told the publication. “First being embraced into the family of folk music in New York and kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief.”
Mangold added, “It’s such an interesting true story at about such an interesting moment in the American scene, different characters from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan, to Pete Seeger to Joan Baez, all have a role to play in this movie.”
Searchlight Pictures confirmed the biopic in January of 2020, however there has been limited information as to how Chalamet is preparing for the role beyond him taking up guitar lessons. With the added fact he will also be singing, there could well be a folk career down the line for the multi-talented actor – who knows?
Chalamet will also sing in the upcoming film Wonka, where he plays the iconic Roald Dahl chocolatier. The Oscar nominee is in high demand as he is also reprising his starring role as Paul Atreides in the upcoming sequel to Dune, which releases later this year.
