During another one of his journeys, Shackleton's ship, Endurance, was crushed in the pack ice and he had to lead his crew on a months-long journey in sub-zero temperatures until they reached solid ground.
For these achievements, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII and he was also made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
