Hopefully we don’t have to wait another three and a half decades for the next one…
36 years after the original, any and all arguments that might ever happen again about whether or not sequels can ever be better than the original can now officially be put to rest thanks to Top Gun: Maverick.
Released in cinemas in May, it features some of the best action scenes in any movie from recent years, and it currently stands as JOE’s second-best movie of 2022 (so far).
The $170 million production has made $1.184 billion – and counting! – at the worldwide box office and scored a magnificent 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
So pretty much from the moment the movie arrived, everyone has been asking: Will there be a Top Gun 3?
Not to get into spoilers, Top Gun: Maverick does end things pretty perfectly for the franchise to stop completely as it stands, but also doesn’t close the door for any future entries to arrive, either.
Miles Teller – who plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of “Goose”, played by Anthony Edwards in the original – spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the potential sequel:
“That would be great, but that’s all up to TC. It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see.
“For him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors it’s just been such a wild ride, and it’s still going.”
When Entertainment Tonight mentioned that the movie is Cruise’s first-ever to bypass the $1 billion box office mark, Teller joked: “That’s definitely what my team has been saying for these future negotiations.”
