The first trailer for The Office spin-off show The Paper has been released.
The show, which will hit our screens next month, stars Ireland's own Domhnall Gleeson, Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim and more.
The highly anticipated sitcom will be set in the same 'stylised comedic' universe as its predecessor; however, it will turn its attention to the staff of a newspaper office.
A plot synopsis states: “The new series features the documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch.
“The crew is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, and the eager publisher who is trying to revive it.”
Greg Daniels (who adapted the American version of The Office) and Michael Koman (co-creator of Nathan for You) were the show's co-creators, writers, and executive producers.
Additionally, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (co-creators of the original British version of The Office) are also executive producers on the show, while actor Oscar Nunez will be reprising his role as Oscar Martinez from The US Office.
Joining Gleeson and Nunez in the show is Tim Key, known for the acclaimed comedy The Ballad of Wallis Island.
In an interview for the above-mentioned film, JOE asked Key about what audiences can expect from The Paper and about working with Domhnall Gleeson.
He described Gleeson as 'fantastic' saying he served as Key’s 'rock' in 'scary' Los Angeles.
Furthermore, he added that he got to watch a bit of the sitcom while doing ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) for it, and that what he saw looked 'pretty funny'.
You can read his comments below:
“I’ve never talked about that yet. I don’t know… I loved working on it.
“I had never worked with Domhnall before, but he’s fantastic, and he was also sort of my rock in LA because it’s quite a scary place.
“I’ve done some ADR on it recently and seen some of the scenes. It looks pretty funny. I’ve no idea, though.
“It’s a very intimidating job to take because you’re sort of on the shoulders of giants. The Office was always my favourite show. I keep going back to it.
“And then this is sort of removed from that because it’s the American Office, and then a spin-off again from that. But still, you’re in an office [he says laughing] and you’re making The Office and it’s quite high pressure.
“I don’t know. I think it will be pretty good.
To go even deeper into The Office/The Paper multiverse, original US Office star, Craig Robinson (Darryl Philbin), previously told JOE that he would be interested in reprising his role in the spin-off of the show.
He told us:
“I fully expect to check it out. With [The US Office and The Paper creator] Greg Daniels at the helm, it’s going to be great.
“And if they want to call Darryl in, see what’s going on… Maybe he teaches some lessons from Athlete [the company that Darryl ended up with in The Office] or shows them how to run the warehouse. I don’t know, but yeah, I would in a heartbeat.
“Just being on The Office, it’s like you got friends everywhere. So, it’s been a huge blessing in my life and the way people have connected to the show… sometimes there’ll be all these stories: ‘I watched this with my mother.’ It’s so beautiful, so yeah.”
The Paper comes to the UK and Ireland UK on September via NOW and Sky.
