#TRAILERCHEST: Here is Ireland’s entry into the 2018 Best Foreign Language Oscar

This movie could make Irish cinematic history.

“I was born at night, that is why they say I’m so quiet.”

Welcome to #TrailerChest, where we’re taking a sneak peek at the brand new trailer for Song Of Granite.

Plot’s it all about?

The first Best Foreign Language Oscar was given in 1929, and in the 88 years since then, not only has Ireland never won the award, but we’ve never even been nominated.

Fingers crossed that changes for the 2018 Academy Awards, as we send forward Song Of Granite as our potential nominee.

The biopic from filmmaker Pat Collins (Silence) charts the rise of traditional Irish folk singer Joe Heaney, and how the songs of his west of Ireland childhood helped shape his complex character. The film had its world premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival and was awarded the Best Cinematography prize at the Galway Film Fleadh.

Enigmatic and complex, Joe Heaney was one of the greats of traditional Irish singing (sean nós). Shaped by the myths, fables, and songs of his upbringing in the west of Ireland, his emergence as a gifted artist came at a personal cost.

We’ll know for certain in Ireland are about to make history when the nominations for the 2018 Oscars are announced on Tuesday 23 January.
