An under-seen mind-bending horror is among the movies on TV tonight

Dave Hanratty

Triangle horror movie

Watch this one, it’s very good!

You know, dear reader, Monday isn’t the most exciting day in the TV schedule calendar, it would seem.

To wit; a lot of the films below appear to be on all the time. In fact, I wasn’t sure if I would even bother with this article today, such is the ‘Oh cool, Unforgiven is on again, is it?’ nature of tonight’s programming.

HOWEVER. Just when it seemed that all hope was lost, the Horror Channel has an absolute gem on that not enough people have seen, quite frankly.

We’ll get to that in a moment. But first, let’s go through this thing chronologically. Here’s how it looks on the box on Monday, 9 May…

Sahara – Film4 – 6.45pm

Matthew McConaughey goes treasure hunting in the sun.

Jaws 2 – ITV4 – 9pm

It was a different shark.

Skyscraper – Film4 – 9pm

The Rock finds himself fighting for his family in a very tall, very dangerous building.

V For Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Uneven but ambitious and effective dystopian thriller in which a theatrical vigilante aims to bring down a tyrannical dictatorship and exact some personal vengeance in the process.

Triangle – Horror Channel – 9pm

This is it, guys. This is the one. This is our main choice this evening.

Released in 2009, Triangle tells the story of Jess (Melissa George), a young mother who goes on a boat trip with one friend and a few strangers, only for a storm to hit. Taking shelter on a nearby cruise liner, the group discover that the vessel is entirely abandoned, save for a masked figure with murder on their mind.

What follows is a smart, science fiction-flavoured horror puzzle that pays off with a great ending. What’s more, the film is only around 99 minutes long and has a more than respectable 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Get on board.

Tully – TG4 – 10.15pm

Charlize Theron and Mackenzie Davis attempt to bond in this whimsical comedy-drama.

Slumdog Millionaire – Film4 – 11.05pm

Danny Boyle’s award-winning drama about a humble tea-seller’s attempts to win a fortune on a TV game show, and the escalating controversy that subsequently arises.

Unforgiven – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm

I did tell you it was on.

Maniac – Horror Channel – 12.45am

Elijah Wood takes on the title role in this grisly horror remake about a serial killer, whose crimes are presented from a first-person viewing perspective throughout the film.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
