If you loved The People v. O.J. Simpson, you’ll be watching this.
In Hollywood circles, there’s no such thing as a bonafide ‘banker’ but if you’re looking for the nearest thing to a guaranteed certainty, Ryan Murphy is the closest thing that you’ll find. As you may know, Murphy is a tour de force that has written, created, directed and produced some of the most successful TV shows in recent memory.
Nip/Tuck, Glee and American Horror Story are just some of the shows that bare his fingerprints, but his most critically-acclaimed creation is coming back this week, American Crime Story.
The People v. O.J. Simpson was one of 2016’s most addictive shows with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, 2 Golden Globes and 35 other awards to its name. In terms of a follow-up, the pressure is on but it appears that Murphy has delivered because as stated previously, the reviews for The Assassination of Gianni Versace are extremely strong.
The nine-episode series stars Édgar Ramírez as the murdered fashion designer, with Penélope Cruz as his sister Donatella Versace and pop sensation Ricky Martin as Versace’s boyfriend Antonio D’Amico.
At present, the show currently has a 74% rating on Metacritic and 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The New York Post calls it “the first great mini-series of 2018”, adding that Versace “is more personal and heartfelt” than The People v. O.J. Simpson.
The Boston Globe calls the show “outstanding” and follows along with the Post in making comparisons to The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The first episode starts this Wednesday at 9pm on BBC2.
