New Netflix epic fantasy series earning comparisons to The Boys

Netflix has released a new fantasy epic series that is earning solid reviews, as well as comparisons to Prime Video hit show The Boys.

This new Netflix show is Twilight of the Gods, an adult animated series co-created and partly directed by Zack Snyder of 300, Man of Steel and Watchmen fame.

Inspired by Norse mythology and set “in a mythical world of great battles, great deeds and great despair”, the show begins with Leif (voiced by Stuart Martin, Rebel Moon), a mortal king, being saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love.

“On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk, Game of Thrones), which sets them — and a crew of crusaders — on a merciless mission for vengeance, against all odds,” the plot synopsis reads.

“This heroic story of love, loss, and revenge is a journey to hell and beyond … across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against deities and demons.”

Boasting a stacked supporting voice cast – including Jessica Henwick (The Matrix 4), Lauren Cohan (The Walking Dead), Peter Stormare (Fargo), Rahul Kohli (Midnight Mass) and pop star Tove Lo – Twilight of the Gods has been well-received for the most part by critics.

Its animated visuals, its bloody violence and Snyder and co’s unique interpretation on Norse folklore has been singled out for particular praise.

Commenting on Twilight of the Gods’ “sex scenes and gruesome violence”, as well as its plot revolving around humans trying to kill gods, one review from Polygon compared the new show to The Boys.

Polygon writer Zosha Millman said of the two series: “Both shows start with gruesome tragedy giving way to rough retribution. And both shows ultimately push past sex scenes and gruesome violence in order to find a more thoughtful exploration of grief, rage, connection, and malice.”

You can read a sample of some other positive reviews of Twilight of the Gods right here:

Austin Burke: “Twilight of the Gods is bloody, brutal, and full of rich characters… The core relationship between Sigrid and Leif is fantastic.”

Collider: “Following the critical failure of Snyder’s Rebel Moon duology, Twilight of the Gods feels like a long-overdue win for the writer-director, whose lofty ideas are often maligned before they ever hit screens.”

Inverse: “Every facet of Snyder’s portfolio shines through in a brutal, beautiful, and shockingly salacious retelling of Norse mythology.”

All eight episodes of Twilight of the Gods are streaming on Netflix right now.
