We could be getting even more gripping cases.
In recent weeks, it’s arguable that no other show has dominated the discourse quite like Unbelievable.
Inspired by real events, Unbelievable tells the true story of Marie Adler (portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever), a young woman who was bound and raped by a masked man in her home over a decade ago.
Adler reported the incident to the police, but because of a lack of strong evidence and her complicated background, neither the police nor some of her close friends believed her story.
Ultimately, a combination of coercion, intense mental pressure and delayed trauma caused Marie to retract the statement that she made to the police.
In doing so, Adler found herself in a downward spiral as she lost her job, some of her friends and the trust of her various foster families.
However, unbeknownst to Marie, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever in the show) met while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes and partnered together to catch a potential serial rapist.
Based on The Marshall Project and Pro Publica Pulitzer Prize-winning article, An Unbelievable Story of Rape, the story has fascinated viewers.
Since being released, Marie Adler has shared her views on the series that was helmed by Oscar nominees Susannah Grant and Lisa Cholodenko.
Of course, Marie’s story has come to a very definitive conclusion in the show, but much like True Detective, American Horror Story, and the upcoming The Haunting of Bly Manor, the show could continue as an anthology series.
During an interview with EW, Susannah Grant said that she’s well aware that viewers would love to see another season of Unbelievable and that she’s very interested in the idea of continuing with the show via an anthology format.
“That’s a cool idea!. This is such a high bar because this case — if there’s some case that I find or come across that has this kind of weight and remarkable storytelling and unbelievable journalism behind it, I would jump at it, absolutely. If there was something that was as exciting to me, I haven’t found it yet, but never say never,” she said.
The dynamic between Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) has been one of the biggest strengths in Unbelievable and Grant would like to work with the duo again, but in a different capacity.
“I gather that there’s been a fondness for that Merritt-Toni duo and people would love to see them again. And God, I would love to work with them again. But no, I think this story has a wonderful shape to it and I think we ended it the way I wanted to end it, which is great.”
