Self-deprecating, funny and just a little bit odd, Richard Ayoade’s interview on Channel 4 News this evening made for four minutes of great television.

If you’ve seen Richard Ayoade in shows like The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and, of course, the IT Crowd, you’ll be aware of just how funny he is, but to say he is a reluctant celebrity would be putting it mildly.

With that in mind, his interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy on Channel 4 News this evening could have been an uncomfortable experience but instead, it was a charming and often very funny conversation that explored a wide range of topics and was something that both men appeared to enjoy.

Ayoade was essentially giving the interview to promote his new book, Ayoade on Ayoade, but he (seemingly intentionally) didn’t do a very good job of it and fair play to Guru-Murthy for making a big contribution to one of the oddest but most enjoyable interviews we’ve seen for a long time.

“Don’t thank me, I’ve done nothing for you.”

Brilliant.
