Vin Diesel confirms the return of two major cast members for Fast & Furious 9

This is getting up to Avengers: Endgame levels of stacked casts.

Fast & Furious 9 was originally due to drop this summer, but after the incredible love-hate bromance between The Rock and Jason Statham in the eighth movie, the folks at Universal decided to bump up their spin-off Hobbs & Shaw to this year, pushing back Fast & Furious 9 to next year instead.

With “Do they really hate each other?” rivalry between Vin Diesel and The Rock still on, the ninth movie is moving on without him and The Stath, but two big recent additions to the franchise will be back.

Vin Diesel took to Instagram to confirm that both Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be back from Fast & Furious 9, on top of new cast addition John Cena, and some more “surprises” along the way.

Mirren is also on the cast-list for this August’s Hobbs and Shaw, while the last we saw of Theron, she was jumping out of a moving plane after attempting to take over the world with nuclear missiles.

There has been precedent for former antagonists to go good for a sequel – Jason Statham, Luke Evans, even The Rock himself was the biggest hurdle in Fast Five – but we have a feeling that won’t be the case for Charlize.

Fast & Furious 9 is directed by Justin Lin (the guy behind Fast & Furiouses 3 to 6), and is currently filming in London, before (rumour alert!) it moves on to Greece for the big action finale.

The movie is set for release in Irish cinemas on 22 May 2020, before the tenth (and reportedly final) Fast & Furious movie arrives in April 2021.

Meanwhile, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw will arrive on Friday 2 August this year.
