"The thing is... I was born brilliant, I was born bad... and a little bit mad."
Yep, there are some very strong supervillain vibes coming from Disney's first trailer to their new live-action movie Cruella, which tells the tale of the early days of infamous 101 Dalmatians antagonist Cruella De Vil.
The trailer shows Emma Stone perfectly cackling her way through the title role, with Hollywood royalty Emma Thompson and Mark Strong in supporting roles.
The official synopsis of the movie is as follows:
"Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella (Stone), a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.
"One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (Thompson), a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella."
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and written by the folks behind the Oscar-winning The Favourite (which Stone also starred in), this looks like the darkest comedy that Disney have attempted yet, going a much grittier route than their previous prequel-behind-the-villain story, Maleficent.
Plus, some of the imagery and performances are very much reminding us of the Joaquin Phoenix-fronted supervillain-explainer, Joker.
The movie is due for release in May, so hopefully Irish cinemas will be reopened by then!
