WATCH: The full trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is here to blow your socks off

Rory Cashin

We’ve been waiting nearly two decades for this movie to arrive!

It has been 18 full years since The Matrix Trilogy ended, and unlike most other blockbusters of the era, time has been especially kind to the groundbreaking sci-fi trilogy.

Sure, some of the special effects look a bit wonky by today’s standards, and neither Reloaded nor Revolutions could reach the same giddy heights as the first Matrix movie, but when we heard that The Matrix Resurrections was on the way, we could barely contain our excitement.

It definitely has offered us up a lot of questions, including how Neo (Keanu Reeves) would be returning, since he was (warning: 18 year old spoiler incoming!) carted off as a blind-and-almost-dead-messiah by the machines at the end of the last movie. Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) could go one better, by actually being killed in the previous movie, but she is returning for the new sequel, too.

Other returning characters include Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) and The Merovingian (Lambert Wilson), but some big names not returning including Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). There are rumours that Yayha Abdul-Mateen II is playing a younger version of Morpheus, while Jonathan Groff is taking on the role of the new and improved Agent, but that remains to be seen.

Other new casting additions, in currently unspecified roles, include Christina Ricci, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick and Priyanka Chopra, while the movie is directed and co-written by Lana Wachowski, one of the directors of the original trilogy.

The Matrix Resurrections will arrive in Irish cinemas on Friday, 22 December.
