WATCH: Hamilton actor says “there’s nothing to apologise for” following Trump’s criticism

Paul Moore

“Conversation is not harassment”.

The recent statement that was made by the cast of the Broadway musical Hamilton towards Vice President Elect Mike Pence has been the most discussed news story from the past few days – let’s not forget the details that have emerged from the inquest into Trump University though – although this being said, Hamilton has taken up the majority of column inches and debate.

Trump has since gone on the offensive by demanding an apology from the cast and crew, and the cast member who read the proclamation has now responded to the President Elect’s demands.

Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in the hit Broadway musical, appeared on CBS This Morning to address the situation.

Here’s what he had to say on…

Why the statement was made.

““The producers, the creatives and the cast, we recognize that Hamilton is inherently an American story told by the definition of the American community — we are men and women of different colors, creeds, and orientations — and the resonate nature of the show throughout the world, throughout the global community, demands that we make statements when there are important issues facing us as a community,” he said. “So we wanted to stand up and spread a message of love, and of unity.”

Trump’s reaction.

“Conversation is not harassment. I was really appreciative that Vice President Elect Pence stood there and listened to what we had to say. I know that some people have said that a one-sided conversation isn’t a conversation, but it’s the beginnings of one that I hope to have.”

Trump’s insistence for an apology.

“There’s nothing to apologise for”.

Why they decided to ask the public to record the statement on their phones.

“Because it was important for us, we wanted it. When you have a platform, art is meant to bring people together. It’s meant to raise consciousness, and when you have a platform like that, I told Jeff Sellers after the show, I applaud you all for not throwing away your shot…for taking a moment to spread a message of love and unity”.

Is Trump welcome to see Hamilton?

“We welcome Donald Trump here at Hamilton. Absolutely. The power of our show is undeniable.”
