The indictment revealed that prosecutors believe the 76-year-old held on to secret documents dealing with the country’s nuclear programmes, its vulnerabilities to military attack and plans for possible retaliation.
According to the Department of Justice, these documents were stored in a multitude of places across the Republican politician's expansive Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, including within a ballroom stage, a shower, a bathroom and a bedroom.
Also contained within the indictment was the allegation that Mr. Trump sought to have his lawyer mislead the FBI in their attempts to investigate the former President, and also that he instructed an aide to conceal boxes of documents from investigators.
Another damning detail of the indictment is the contention that Mr. Trump shared details of a highly classified "plan of attack" against the nation of Iran, with visitors to his New Jersey golf club, and that he also showed military maps to those without the necessary security clearance.
The indictment does include photographic evidence, with images of boxes of documents containing sensitive material found across the 2024 Presidential hopeful's estate.

On Tuesday, Mr. Trump is set to appear in person at a courthouse in Miami to answer the charges levelled against him, with the former President's aide Walt Nauta also facing charges in relation to the retention of classified material.
Maintaining his innocence, Mr. Trump took to his social media network Truth Social on Friday, decreeing that;
"I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!"
In his tirade against his prosecution, Mr. Trump also took aim at the lead of the investigation, special counsel Jack Smith, by labelling him as a "deranged psycho".
Speaking as to the seriousness of the charges made against the former President, the prosecution said that "The unauthorised disclosure of these classified documents could put at risk the national security of the United States, foreign relations, the safety of the United States military, and human sources and the continued viability of sensitive intelligence collection methods".
