WATCH: HBO’s new trailer for The Wire is a reminder of why it’s one of the greatest TV shows ever

The Wire

“The game is out there and it’s either play or get played.”

When debates take place about the greatest TV shows of all time – and they do so increasingly given the raft of quality offerings in recent years – The Wire is usually always one of the shows at the top of everyone’s list.

And rightly so.

David Simon’s exploration of the criminal underworld in the city of Baltimore, with separate themes for each of the show’s five brilliant seasons, was something of a slow burner with audiences and critics at first, but eventually developed a deserved reputation as one of the finest shows ever made.

The Wire finished on HBO in 2008, but thanks to healthy sales of box sets and reruns on channels such as BBC 2, Sky Atlantic and, of course, TG4, it was consistently being seen by new audiences over the years, all of whom were able to appreciate just how good it was.

HBO, the channel on which it originally aired, want to continue to attract new audiences, or even appeal to those who want to watch it all over again, by creating a brand new trailer to highlight the fact that all five seasons are available to stream on HBO Now.

Including clips from all five seasons and featuring cameos from iconic lead characters such as McNulty, Avon Barksdale, Stringer Bell, Omar Little, Bunk Moreland and more, if it doesn’t make you want to go and watch it all over again, we don’t know what will.

Sheeeeeeiiiiiiiiiit…
