WATCH: Uber driver in America demonstrates an uncanny knowledge of War of the Buttons

Alan Loughnane

Your Tuesday dose of randomness…

Have you ever seen the classic Irish movie, War of the Buttons?

The movie is about two gangs of children from working class and middle class backgrounds, in rival villages who engage in battles with the winners stealing the buttons from the other groups shirts.

While the film is relatively well-known in Ireland, it never achieved worldwide acclaim and we’d be doubtful of there being more than a handful of people outside of Ireland who know the movie. This is why the following video is remarkable.

Irish filmmaker Rob Reeves is currently travelling through America, and he grabbed an Uber while over there. But he was hugely surprised when talk with the driver turned towards Irish movies.

The driver, said that he’d seen an Irish movie called War of the Buttons on cable in the USA around 20 years ago.

He then proceeded to outline the plot of the movie in detail, complete with the names of the towns involved, much to the amazement of Rob.

Check the video out below, after an initial conversation about In Bruges, talk turns to War of the Buttons from about the one minute mark onwards.
