Dublin gangster rap duo drop controversial new song, and it will be the talk of the city

We imagine this will upset quite a few people.

“I haven’t seen a ronnie in about three year!”

You might recall, a few months back we covered the potential new kings of Irish Gangster Rap, and now Versatile are back with their new single ‘Scorching Again’.

In the lead up to the release of their mix-tape Dublin City G’s, the duo dropped their new music video and it features the lads in space and in a science lab, attempting to understand what happened to the Dublin of 2001, lamenting the loss of recent stabbings and the increase in hipsters.

Now… here’s the thing…

It is very obvious to us that Versatile are not intending for anyone to take any of this too seriously – “We can’t have this / This can’t go on / We’re losing Dublin / The size of me schlong” is just one of the many lyrics that point towards their sense of humour – but we wonder if everyone else will get the joke?

The flash cuts of teenagers as they announce that kids these days should “Be lookin for harmless victims to attack”, before cutting to a flashing image of a knife – that is a pretty dark joke. So dark and delivered so straight faced that maybe the humour gets lost by a certain portion of the listeners.

What do you reckon? Will it offend (more than it is obviously intended to), or worst-case-scenario, inspire? Or is it obvious that they’re joking?

Either way, we imagine it will be the talk of the city once the mixtape drops on Wednesday 1 November.
