“Some people took me to one side and were like, ‘calm yourself down.'”

Ed Sheeran shocked the music world when he took a year-long break from music in October 2015. He admitted on The Jonathan Ross Show on Friday night that the reason he needed the break was due to his struggles with substance abuse.

Speaking to Ross, the Galway Girl singer said that the substance abuse began to ease the ever-increasing pressure of fame that came after the release of his second album.

“All the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.

“I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off”, Sheeran added.

“I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘calm yourself down.’”

Sheeran said that the substance abuse started off as fun to begin with and that going to parties was a big influence but eventually it led to him doing it in his own time…

“That was a wake-up call. I can’t write songs under the influence. I can’t perform under the influence. So, the more I worked, the less [that happened]”, Sheeran concluded.

The news comes after it was found that Sheeran was hit by a car in London while he was cycling his bike. The singer took to Instagram on Monday to tell his fans the news about his arm.
