It’s official! These are Ireland’s top five Christmas songs according to our poll

Christmas countdown

Carl Kinsella

You can’t be surprised by number.

According to our JOE poll, Fairytale of New York is Ireland’s favourite Christmas song by a LANDSLIDE.

We asked our readers to choose from 40 or so Christmas classics, and of the 1,024 people who voted, exactly 50% of them voted for just one song – this masterpiece by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.

Coming in at a very, very distant second with 69 votes was Driving Home for Christmas, the 1984 hit for Chris Rea.

This was closely followed by Jona Lewie’s anti-war anthem Stop The Cavalry.

Stop The Cavalry finished just three votes ahead of another Christmas belter, All I Want For Christmas is you by Mariah Carey.

Bringing up the rear of Ireland’s top five Christmas songs is Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone. Another certified yuletide banger.
