We asked our readers to choose from 40 or so Christmas classics, and of the 1,024 people who voted, exactly 50% of them voted for just one song - this masterpiece by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.

Coming in at a very, very distant second with 69 votes was Driving Home for Christmas, the 1984 hit for Chris Rea.

This was closely followed by Jona Lewie's anti-war anthem Stop The Cavalry.

Stop The Cavalry finished just three votes ahead of another Christmas belter, All I Want For Christmas is you by Mariah Carey.

Bringing up the rear of Ireland's top five Christmas songs is Shakin' Stevens' Merry Christmas Everyone. Another certified yuletide banger.
