JOE’s Song Of The Day #582: FLYNN – ‘Red Light’

Eric Lalor

FLYNN

FLYNN has arrived with a single so smooth, it’ll glide into your ears.

FLYNN, real name Darren Flynn, was raised in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath but has spent the last number of years plying his trade in the U.K.  Mullingar must have something in the water having produced artists such as Niall Horan, Bressie amongst others. He moved to Bristol where he found a love for R’n’B and 90s hip-hop. He spent three years on the open mic circuit there learning his craft.

London came calling and he moved there to further develop his music and songwriting skills. “When I wrote Red Light I was basically writing a note to myself. The song is about finding the courage to dive into life head on without any hesitations or second thoughts. I remind myself that overthinking will only hold me back and that taking risks is the only way to progress and succeed” FLYNN explains.

Directed by Nathan Barlow and produced by Diffusion Lab, the video tells a story of a girl (played by Irish model Vanessa O’Connell), who is feeling hesitant in her life and stuck at a red light. In a moment of clarity, she starts running away from her past life with motivation at the crossroads of her future.

With a combination of his acoustic beginnings and the introduction of smooth, dance-inducing synth, the song stands out thanks to the sing-aloud chorus. The stylish choral-layering of FLYNN’s voice lifts the bridge and adds to the track as it reaches its triumphant finish.
