JOE’s Song Of The Day #590: BARQ – ‘Sassy Mouth’

Eric Lalor

BARQ are back with a bang, a double bang.

We are big fans of BARQ here in JOE. We’ve featured some of their stuff before and make no apologies about that. They are the creators of their self-proclaimed genre ‘Agrosoul’. A four-piece band who are shoving groove into the belly of the rock-beast and creating ‘Agrosoul’.

They create music to dance dangerously to. This time around the band have released two new singles. This track, ‘Sassy Mouth’ and also another track called ‘Earthquakes’. Jess Kav, Neil Dorrington, Stephen McHale and Tommy Gray make up BARQ and there is an argument to be made that they could be the coolest band in Ireland right now.

BARQ

‘Sassy Mouth’ is Jess Kav at her imperious best. As the title of the tracks suggests, it’s full of sass and attitude, ably backed by a band in full control and not afraid to take chances.

Inspired by the courage and resilience of the Repeal The Eighth movement and the perils of online debate, ‘Sassy Mouth’ is a call to arms for the emerging voices that are searching for change.

Throughout the last 18 months, BARQ have left audiences in awe with their energetic and dynamic live show. In 2017, they completed their first tour, with dates in the UK and Ireland, and travelled to Toronto for Canadian Music Week. After returning to Dublin from Mondo New York, they began touring as part of the Smithwicks Soundtrack Series, recreating the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction in their own ‘Agrosoul’ style.

There is an air of inevitability about this band. An inevitability of success and fame. They are on an upward trajectory and keep getting better. Where it will take them, who knows, but it’s going to be fun watching.
