JOE’s Song Of The Day #575: The Shaker Hymn – ‘Colour Of The Holy Sun’

Eric Lalor

The Shaker Hymn are preparing to release their third album.

The Shaker Hymn are putting the finishing touches to their third album. The five-piece from Cork have released a single ahead of their album release and it’s got George Harrison-esque slide guitars and Beach Boys harmonies.

Rich praise indeed, but not very far from the truth. It’s a hook-laden pop hit which will inevitably live in your ear for a long time after you’ve heard it.

Vocalist, Caoilian Sherlock said: “We don’t often write new songs out of an improv ‘jam’ type of thing – but this started as a little two chords warm up at rehearsal a few months back.  I went away and wrote a melody, and lyrically I was aiming for a joyous apocalypse sound. A song to celebrate The Rapture heading our way. In the studio we were throwing a lot of unusual names for us – Spandau Ballet and Christopher Cross’ Ride Like The Wind for example, as well as the crooners like Sinatra and Jacques Brel.”

The release of ‘Colour Of The Holy Sun’ comes after a busy year where the band toured extensively around Ireland, while also appearing on the soundtrack to breakout Irish film ‘Handsome Devil’.

This April, The Shaker Hymn begin an Irish tour with Pale Rivers – the synth and guitar led five-piece based out of Cork and Tipperary. See them at the Róisín Dubh Galway, Bello Bar Dublin, MusicZone Cork, Gleeson’s Clonmel, The Roundy Cork, and Connolly’s of Leap in West Cork.
