There’s a petition to get U2 to play a gig in Cork on The Joshua Tree tour

Paul Moore

This would be a very popular decision in Munster.

Blue Monday wasn’t exactly a beautiful day for U2 fans as their highly anticipated date at Croke Park sold out in a matter of minutes. Ticketmaster and Seatwave must work in mysterious ways, eh? While organisers are adamant that a second date isn’t currently on the agenda, we would be very surprised to see the band sticking to just the one date in Ireland.

After all, U2 played four nights at the 3Arena as part of their Innocence and Experience tour and in terms of their recent performances at Croke Park, they’ve rarely stuck to just one date. During both the 360° and Vertigo tours, they played three nights at GAA HQ’s.

The desire for another U2 gig in Ireland is strong and some fans of the band are making the case for Páirc Uí Chaoimh to be used as the venue for a potential second gig, if it’s approved. The redeveloped stadium is expected to be opened in June with an increased capacity of 45,000.

The petition says “As Bono said in 1987, the first time he felt he was in a band was in Cork City. U2 have a long heritage of playing in Cork dating back to the late 1970s in the Arcadia Ballroom. In anticipation of this concert we built a motorway from Dublin to Cork, the Jack Lynch tunnel and rebuilt the Páirc Uí Chaoimh stadium. U2 concluded the European leg of the original Joshua Tree tour at Páirc Uí Chaoimh on August 8th 1987. It so happens that the same date August 8 is available this year, a fitting end to the 30 year celebration!”

While we’re confident that any second date on The Joshua Tree tour would take place in Croke Park, numbers always do the most talking, we’re certain that the people in Munster would be very happy to get behind this campaign.

Speaking as a U2 fan, I will follow them anywhere. You’re probably the same.
