VIDEO: Former David Bowie collaborator plays gorgeous version of Life on Mars on BBC Radio 2 tribute

Conor Heneghan

“I just played on what I consider the best song I’ve ever had the privilege to work on.”

Rick Wakeman, as you may well know, is known the world over for his work with the band Yes and as a solo artist for the last 50 years or so; his albums have been bought by millions of people worldwide.

He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry throughout his career, perhaps most famously with David Bowie, with whom he worked on Bowie’s Space Oddity and Hunky Dory albums, as well as some later Bowie material.

Wakeman played piano on one of Bowie’s earliest hits, Life on Mars from the Hunky Dory album, and on BBC Radio 2 today, he played a gorgeous version of the song while recalling what it was like to work with a man whose loss is still being profoundly felt the world over.

If you’re a Bowie fan, hell, even if you’re a fan of music in general, then you’ll appreciate just how good this is.
