16 more deaths confirmed due to coronavirus, 370 more cases confirmed

There is now a total of 5,364 confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland.

Department of Health officials confirmed this evening that 16 more people have died in the Republic of Ireland as a result of Covid-19.

78 is the median age of those who were confirmed dead today.

As of Monday (6 April), 174 people have died from coronavirus in Ireland since the outbreak began. Additionally, seven people died from the virus in Northern Ireland today, which takes the total deaths for the island to 244.

The total number of cases across the island is now 6,522.

The median age of deaths in Ireland currently stands at 81. Of everyone hospitalised, 169 cases have been admitted to ICU. 55% of all cases are in Dublin. Cork has seen the next highest fraction of cases at 7%.

However, officials believe that the “surge” in cases is yet to come. Dr. Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer at the HSE, said: “Our healthcare system has been preparing for a surge in COVID-19 cases but it is important to remind people that our hospitals continue to carry out all emergency and essential activity.”
