16 people hospitalised after flight makes emergency landing in Shannon Airport

Sixteen people were taken to hospital in Limerick this morning after a transatlantic flight made an emergency landing in Shannon Airport.

United Airlines flight UA-880 had been travelling from Houston to Heathrow when it was forced to divert to Shannon after encountering severe turbulence.

The plane landed safely at 6am this morning and 14 passengers and two crew members were taken to University Hospital Limerick with minor injuries.

United Airlines have issued a statement explaining that the issue arose after the flight experienced severe turbulence.

“United Airlines is providing care and support to customers and crew of flight UA-880 which experienced severe and unexpected turbulence during a flight from Houston to London Heathrow today,” the airlines said.

“The aircraft diverted to Shannon Airport in Ireland where it was met by medical personnel.

“14 customers and two flight attendants have been taken to a local hospital.”
