Very sad news.

23 people have died and 211 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland, the National Public Health Emergency Team has announced.

It brings the total number of deaths in Ireland to 1,339 and the total number of confirmed cases to 21,983.

61,707 tests were carried out in the last week with 2,280 of these tests returning a positive result.

214,761 tests in total have been carried out in total as of midnight on Monday.

Dr Cillian De Gascun, Chair of the NPHET Expert Advisory Group, said: “The positivity rate reducing is a good sign.

“Combined with the high level of testing we are now undertaking, this gives us confidence that we are on a path towards suppression of the disease.”

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, warned that while restrictions are being eased, now is not the time for complacency because the virus is still present in the community.

“As Ireland works to ease restrictions, it is crucial that we preserve the progress our country has made in recent weeks,” Dr Holohan said.

“This is a highly infectious disease. It thrives in crowds. It has the potential to rapidly spread to levels that our health service will find difficult to respond to.

“While we plan how to safely emerge from recent restrictions, none of us should forget that the virus is still in our community. Those who get infected have the same risk of serious illness as they did at the beginning of this pandemic.”

Figures released by An Garda Síochána on Tuesday showed that Gardaí continue to see a high level of compliance from the public with the public health guidelines.

In other news, Dublin City Council announced that the two hours between 1.30pm and 3.30pm will be a time reserved for those cocooning to avail of parks across Dublin from tomorrow.
