A 98-year-old man has died after his car plummeted off an 80ft cliff in a busy UK tourist hotspot.
Reginald Rees was inside the vehicle when it fell from the cliff near Rhossili Bay in South Wales.
Police and coastguard teams were called and a tractor was used to retrieve the wreckage of the car from the base of the cliff.
Mr Rees’ body was inside the car as it was pulled away from horrified onlookers who had been told by the police not to let their children see the aftermath of the incident.
Beachgoer Heather Fenton told The Sun: “Police officers went along the beach asking families to distract their kids or remove them from the beach. Cops confirmed the body was inside the car.”
She continued: “The tarpaulin was flapping in the wind and there was a concern everyone could see inside. It's so tragic and upsetting for everyone.”
Mr Rees went missing after driving from his home in Swansea last Wednesday.
The vehicle was found around 40 minutes away on the Gower coastline.
The beach where the cliff is located is popular with tourists thanks to its well-known landmarks.
It was one of just two UK beaches to feature in the 2023 Big 7 Travel list of the world’s must-see beaches.
It was named alongside the likes of Whitehaven Beach in Australia and Navagio Beach in Zakynthos.
South Wales police are carrying out an investigation into what happened.
