A new IKEA store could soon be coming to Cork

Conor Heneghan

It’s slowly but surely taking over.

The doors have barely opened at Ireland’s second IKEA store in Carrickmines in Dublin and already there’s talk that the Swedish furniture giant could be about to open another outlet in Ireland’s real capital second biggest city.

According to the Evening Echo, IKEA representatives have already held two meetings with senior officials on Cork County Council, including Chief Executive Tim Lucey, where potential locations in the Cork region for an IKEA store were discussed.

The Evening Echo reports that Blarney, Mallow and the Amgen site in Carrigtwohill have previously been mentioned as possible locations for an IKEA store in Cork.

Anyone who has ever witnessed just how busy the IKEA store is in Ballymun will be well aware of the appeal that IKEA has in Ireland and it’s little surprise that the multinational announced pre-tax profits of €13.1 million for 2015 earlier this year.

A timeline for the potential arrival of IKEA in Cork has yet to be revealed, but it would appear as if Rebel County residents could be flat out assembling flatpack furniture down by the Lee sooner rather than later.
