Aer Lingus: Two people must be in our cockpits at all times

The Irish airline outlines its cabin policy

Aer Lingus says two flight crew members must be in their cockpits at all times.

Two people must be on the flight deck on Aer Lingus flights at all times, it has been confirmed today.

This has been put in place as a safeguard against security issues or if a member of the flight crew becomes sick, and has been policy since sealed cockpits came into being.

When the plane’s pilot or co-pilot requires a comfort break, a member of the cabin crew must enter the cockpit before one of the pilots leave.

This reassuring news emerges after it was revealed that Andreas Lubitz, a co-pilot on Germanwings flight 9525, had intentionally flown the air-bus into the side of a mountain on Tuesday.

European regulations do not currently stipulate that two members of the flight crew must be in the cockpit at all time, but the Irish Aviation Authority said it has approved procedures with Irish airlines to ensure that there are a minimum of two persons in the cockpit at all times during flight.
