The young boy was taken off his life-support machine earlier this week.

Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old child who was at the centre of a legal battle over his medical care that has garnered worldwide attention, has died.

On Monday, he had been taken off his life-support machine following a ruling by the High Court, but he continued to live for the next few days.

However, at 2.30am on Saturday morning, he passed away while being treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

In the days since Monday, Alfie’s 21-year-old father Thomas Evans and 20-year-old mother Kate Evans had appealed the High Court ruling, and they fought to take their son to a foreign hospital for treatment for a degenerative medical condition, but lost a final court appeal on Wednesday.

They took to Facebook in the early hours of Saturday morning to say:

“Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am. We are heartbroken. Thank you everyone for all your support.”

In a statement issued on its website, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital said:

“We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie’s family at this extremely distressing time. All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them. This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.”
