Almost 400 decomposing bodies were found piled high in a mysterious compound near US-Mexico border
Close to 400 decomposing bodies were found stacked on one another in a neglected compound at the Mexico-US border.
According to the investigators, the number of corpses is still set to rise, per the Daily Mail.
As of now, 383 complete human bodies and 6 partial remains have been discovered at the mysterious site in Juarez, which is right across the border from El Paso in Texas, per the TV station KVIA.
It is believed that some of the bodies found at the site are thought to have been dead for three to four years. According to the authorities, the seemingly ‘secret crematorium’ looks more like a home than an incinerator.
The reason officials believe it must have been some sort of crematorium is due to the bodies appearing to have been embalmed. However, it is yet unclear why the bodies had not been either buried or incinerated.
The owner, Jose Luis Arellano Cuaron, along with an employee, will be charged with improper disposal of bodies.
The bodies are currently being inspected to ensure the people found weren’t victims of murder. Therefore, further charges aren’t yet ruled out.
To add to the mystery, officials have said that many bodies have come from six different funeral homes within the vicinity, where relatives were given ‘ashes’, and were under the belief their loved ones had been properly disposed of.
Chihuahua Attorney General Cesar Jauregui said, “They constantly received bodies for cremation.
“They misrepresented hundreds of times to funeral companies that they would be cremating those bodies.”
Although the owner of the funeral home appeared to hold three licenses to operate, it was unclear whether the operation was of good repute.
According to the governor of the state of Chihuahua, the crematorium had been run by “irresponsible and unscrupulous people who misused these licenses and permits.”
The grim discovery did result in some closure for the families of hundreds of people who have been missing in the city known for cartel violence.
It was during Biden’s reign that many migrants waiting for legal entry into the US were often kidnapped or went missing.
A representative from the Ciudad Juárez Women’s Roundtable Network told KFOX: “Of course, all the families and we ourselves were worried and wondered who is there? What bodies are there? Are they identified? The mothers told us, ‘My daughter is not there.'”
Families are asked to bring an official ID, as well as a description of what their loved one was last wearing and what funeral home their loved one was released to, to offer comfort and closure to the family members involved.
