According to government officials, volcanic ash has been spewed as high as 8,000 metres due to sporadic eruptions in recent days.

The 2,600 metre high mountain in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia has been erupting on and off since September having previously been dormant for three years and has caused the evacuation of over 6,000 people living in the proximity of the mountain in recent days.

The strongest eruptions have taken place in the last few days and as a result, black smoke and ash coming from the mountain have been visible as far away as the provincial capital Medan, located 30 miles to the north-east.

Some amazing yet ominous images (see top of the page and below) have been taken from Mount Sinabung in recent days showing just how violent the eruptions have been in an area renowned for being vulnerable to seismic activity.
