Pic: Irish photographer releases some cracking photos of the 1991 Féile music festival

A must see

Carl Kinsella

Throwback Thursday, indeed.

Photographer Wally Cassidy has released a gallery of photographs taken at the 1991 Féile festival, whose lineup featured Van Morrison, Happy Mondays, Elvis Costello, The La’s and The Pixies frontman Frank Black.

The festival took place in Thurles’ Semple Stadium, which earned it the nickname ‘Trip to Tipp’ and this week marks the 24th year anniversary of the festival.

Cassidy’s photos are definitely a testament to the way that Irish people approach partying but we love the images of festival-goers engaging in a friendly game of barrel-throwing.

The photographs, all in black and white, are more focused on the human element of the festival as opposed to the music, offering a unique and old-school insight into a festival that’s gone by.

They also prove that people were unbelievably effective at getting the shift back in the day.

Judging by these photos, it might even be a good idea for any readers born in May 1992 to ask their parents if they were in attendance at the festival.

For example, check out the photo below. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the self-appointed king of the phone booth, but look at what’s going on inside.
