Apollo House organisers announce plans to leave the homeless shelter

JOE

They will leave as soon as suitable accommodation has been found elsewhere.

A group of people currently staying in Apollo House have announced that they will leave the building as soon as suitable new accommodation can be found.

According to the charity Home Sweet Home, at least two new facilities will be opened up as a way to deal with the homelessness crisis – however, it is unclear whether those staying in Apollo House will have left the premises by the court-ordered deadline of midday on Wednesday, 11 January.

Simon Coveney, the Housing Minister, has said that the new facilities for the homeless will have cost in excess of €4m, and that they will include units suitable for single persons and couples, and they will also promote independent living.

It has not been revealed whether or not those buildings are NAMA-owned.

“The short, medium and long term needs, including care plans for all current Apollo House residents, will be met according to their needs,” Home Sweet Home said in a statement.

“The rollout of community based homeless services has been agreed.”
