Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

An Garda Síochána is urging the public not to share pictures of an incident in Westmeath which resulted in the death of Paul ‘Babs’ Connolly.

The 47 year old man died following a fatal assault on Church Street in Athlone on Saturday (13 August).

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident, and remain in Garda custody.

“An Garda Síochána is aware that images of the incident on Church Street are being shared across social media and messaging apps,” Gardaí said in a statement on Sunday (14 August).

“An Garda Síochána appeals to everybody NOT to share this material, it is disrespectful and upsetting to the family and friends of the deceased and all persons involved in this incident and is unhelpful to the Garda investigation.”

A post mortem has been completed in relation to Connolly’s death, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

Investigations are ongoing.
