To be expected…

In a result that will surprise very few people, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany was the best-selling book of 2016 in Ireland.

The latest book sold 69,890 copies to a value of just over €1.3 million during 2016 according to figures released by Nielsen BookScan and published in the Irish Times.

Irish rugby legend Paul O’Connell and his autobiography The Battle, came in second spot on the list and was the only other book to break €1 million in sale money. The Munster man’s book shifted 66,738 copies to the tune of just under €1.25 million.

Of course, there’s another reason why 2016 was very memorable for the Limerick man

Joe Wicks’ book, Lean in 15, was the third best selling book during 2016 but fell a long way short of the two literary giants at the top of the list, selling 46,841 copies.

Graham Norton’s venture into the world of novels also went down well with the Irish public as sales in ireland surpassed those in England as he managed to sell 51,814 copies of his debut novel Holding, at a value of just under €620,000.

Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on The Train shifted 58,000 copies within our shores.

In terms of Irish authors, they ranked strongly with books by Ross O’Carroll Kelly, Anne Enright, Louise O’Neill and Liz Nugent filling up the top ten books sold.

In total, Irish books accounted for 14 of the top 20 books sold in 2016.
